Tips On Creating Pocket Wedding Invitations

Pocket wedding invitations are really fun and interesting. They come in lots of sizes and designs, and you can make them traditional or modern. If you need to save on your wedding invites but still want to use this type of design, consider doing some of the embellishing and printing on your own. Here are a few ideas you might consider using.

Buy pre-made pockets

Actually folding the wedding invitations with pockets can be done by hand, but this can get awfully complicated. Youll probably be better off purchasing a basic invitation in the size you want. Then, you can print and personalize it on your own.

Before you buy any pocket wedding invitations, though, make sure you know what you want. Some pocket invitations are like envelopes that hold printed invitation cards in them. Others actually fold out like origami and have the information printed inside them. You can use a combination of these ideas, too. Have the main invitation information printed on the fold-out pocket, and then slip your reception invitation and other information on little cards inside the pocket.

Embellish at will

Pocket invitations are already a little complex by design, so a few well-chosen embellishments will go far. You could start out with a pretty patterned paper, but then you shouldnt add too many extras. If you begin with a plain black, silver, or white paper, you can add ribbons and other pretty extras to make your invitations look unique and professional. Here are a few ideas you might try:

  • For an envelope-style pocket invitation, try sealing it with sealing wax stamped with your initials or a pretty design. Alternatively, you could seal the invitation with a pretty sticker that would peel off easily when the invitation was opened.
  • Any invitation that needs to be held together offers plenty of options. The simplest way to do it is to purchase tiny Velcro stickers that will hold the pieces together. The stickers go on the inside of the flaps where they cant be seen, leaving you plenty of options for decorating the top of the flaps with stickers and cut-outs.
  • Another option for holding pocket wedding invitations together is to tie them round with a ribbon. Your guests will be delighted as they untie a delicate ribbon to see what your invitation holds!
  • Cover the bottom of your invitation with a pretty vellum paper, and then have the flap be the plain paper decorated with an embellishment of your choosing. It can be fun to use a vellum paper with a traditional wallpaper or brocade-like design, and then to transfer a part of that design onto the invitations flap.
  • Make your invitations super personalized by writing your wedding information by hand. Put the information on small cards that you can slide into the pockets. Only undertake this if you have a really simple script as creating loads of invitations can be time consuming.
  • If youre using an envelope-style pocket invite, you could write a phrase in calligraphy on the flap. You could write your names, initials, or a phrase inviting the guest to your big day.
  • Pretty embellishments like diamonds, beads, and stickers can be used on pocket wedding invitations, but make sure that they still allow your invitations to fold correctly and to lay flat when shut.

What to put inside

The advantage of pocket wedding invitations is that you can put any number of things in them, and everything will be held together neatly. Make sets of matching cards with your wedding, reception, and gift registry information, or include the RSVP card inside the invitation. Another option is to personalize your invites by sending an engagement picture in the pocket of your wedding invitation. A more practical option is to include a map to your wedding and reception venues that your guests can pull out and take along with them on your big day.

Before you start assembling your invitations, make a prototype or two. Make sure that the invitations open and close easily, and that your design looks nice no matter which way youre looking at the invite. If it has lots of embellishments or is delicate, consider posting it to yourself just to see if it arrives in one piece. Once youve tested your invitation and have decided that you love it, you can assemble all your pocket wedding invitations in preparation for your big day!
