My Website Success Story

Hi, I'm Nicola and this is my website.

People often ask what I do, so here's my story about how this website came to be a success and how I made my dream a reality...

I'm now my own boss and work from the comfort of my spare room.

My old working life

A few years ago, I used to have an hour long commute into my stressful job in advertising.

Long hours and dealing with difficult clients all day wasn't much fun and I was really beginning to hate going to work.

I also had a nagging concern that there weren't many women over 35 in the industry. Which made me wonder, what happened to them? Advertising is an industry for the young and being in my early 30's I was keen to find an alternative.

I tried to think of different careers or opportunities, but was often stuck with the fact that I'd still have a long commute into the centre of London and/or work long hours, for little fulfilment.

I wanted something that would give me flexibility, freedom and the opportunity to be my own boss.

I think that's something we all dream of...

With working hard though, my creativity was stifled leaving me frustrated both at work and at home. Something had to be done!

A little journey

Our wedding day

In summer 2006, I married Stu. We had a cheap wedding as you probably know.

Our reason for a cheap wedding was because we were planning a very long honeymoon, about 8 months to be precise. It was to be our little adventure before properly settling down together.

We had many, many long bus journeys on our travels. Eight hours here, twelve hours there. Plenty of time to let the imagination stretch and come up with some ideas for my future career.

I knew that I wanted to do something that I loved. I love writing, I love the internet, I love weddings and I'm quite crafty.

I knew from my research that content on the internet is king. With good content, your visitors will love you and they'll click. Click on ads or click on affiliate links and every time they click or buy, I'd make a small commission.

So whilst in South America, I set about writing lots of articles about how to have a cheap wedding. After all, this is something I knew a lot about.

As part of my cheap wedding, I made my own wedding invitations. It was easy, but there wasn't much information on the internet about it at the time.

Templates, designs and ideas were hard to come by and so I felt that there was a need for this information, for FREE.

It was a natural progression from my first wedding website.

I was really happy with technology that drives Cheap-Wedding-Success.co.uk, so I used it for my second website, Wedding-Invitation-Ideas.com too. That technology is SBI – Site Build It. It broke everything down about creating a website...

...including all the confusing stuff about search engine optimisation, copywriting for the web, how to get traffic and how to build a page.

A few months later, I quit my job in advertising and took up working on my websites full time.

And shortly after that we had an addition to the family, who keeps me very, very busy. I still manage my websites part-time and make enough to cover all, yes ALL our household expenditure (and more).

Unfortunately, in the recent economic hard times, like so many others, my husband lost his contract. He's now a stay-at-home dad, while I work on the websites. Having the websites behind us has been a great safety net as well as a source of income.

What's great about what we do is that we can spend so much quality time with our son. We're at home all the time for him and we can dip in and out of our business as much, or as little, as we want.

It's funny to think that your hobby or a passion can turn into something profitable in your spare time!
