Wedding Invitation Envelopes

With wedding invitation envelopes, there’s an opportunity to make a fabulous first impression. Think about extending the creativity and designs of your invites to your envelopes. Here are some ideas how, but first, how to select the size of your envelopes.

Sizing up your envelopes
With wedding invitation envelopes, and envelopes in general, the sizing is quite confusing. I don’t think many of us pay much attention to how envelopes are actually sized. If you’re making your own wedding stationery though, you’ll need to know.

Coloured wedding invitation envelopes
Most invitations will come with matching envelopes and even pre-folded blank cards often do as well. However, if you’re making your cards from scratch or have bought just the blank cards, then you’ll need to find a suitable envelope to fit them.

Here’s the run down on wedding invitation envelope sizes:
• An A6 card will need a C6 envelope
• An A5 card will need a C5 envelope
• A ‘tall’ or ‘DL’ card will need a DL envelope
• A square card will need a square envelope to fit your paper – usually 5.2”x5.2”

It’s really important that some card blanks differ slightly from the sizes. I’ve come across individual card blanks that aren’t quite A6, instead, they’re 4” x 6”, so just double check that your invite will fit your wedding invitation envelopes.

Luxurious lined envelopes
Most envelopes come unlined. They’re the bog standard types of envelopes you use for everyday purposes. The weight of the paper can change to give a more superior feel, but of course, you’ll pay for it.

For a luxurious finish to your envelopes, you can buy them double lined. In this instance, the envelope is lined with a contrasting colour paper, usually picked up from the design on the wedding invite. Choosing this type of envelope will bump up your costs significantly, but if you’re after a luxurious first impression for your wedding and you have the budget, then you could consider this type of envelope.

Creating unique wedding invitation envelopes
I’d strongly recommend using card blanks that come with envelopes, that way you don’t need to worry about the sizing! You can make these fairly standard envelopes look more special using some of the ideas below. Since your envelope will be the first thing they see, you can really make an impression!

Most home printers will print onto envelopes, so you could print little emblems, motifs or illustrations on to your envelopes. You can match these to your invitations or to your wedding theme.

Another really cute touch is to use stickers. Almost like a ‘seal’ on your envelope, you could print your illustration or emblem on stickers and then pop them on the envelopes. A great alternative to printing directly onto the envelopes.

For a fine finish, you print the names and addresses out on address labels and again, add your little emblem or illustration.

There’s absolutely no reason why your creativity should stop with just the invite, you could let it run wild with the envelope too. So go on, be creative!
