How to choose the right font for your wedding invitations

Choosing the right font can be one of the toughest parts of designing your wedding invitations. There are just so many options available! The font you choose should depend on the overall style and feel you want to create with your invitations.

For more traditional invitations, a scripted font combined with a font that includes serifs is always appropriate. A sans serif font looks more relaxed and casual. If you're using bold graphics and colors on your invitation, consider a font with broader strokes, but if you're using elegant, dainty images, consider a more flowing font.

One of the best ways to choose the right font is to play around with different options. Look online for new fonts if you don't have many on your computer, and insert them into your invitations. Try combining different fonts to get the exact look and feel you want for your invitations.

Bold and beautiful modern wedding invitations

Modern wedding invitations are a great way to go if you're having a less traditional wedding feel. Many of the most up to date designs feature bold fonts and color blends that set them apart from more lacy, traditional invitations.

Some of my favorite bold invitations are the ones that feature silhouette style accents. You can do just about anything with silhouettes, and they're not as fussy as complete graphics. I also love monograms as accents for these modern style wedding invitations. You can make a monogram look funky and laid-back or elegant, but it makes a great focal point, either way.

One of the best ways to make your invitations bolder is to use different fonts. Some of the new Vera Wang invitations use a combination of a blocky font, a sans serif font, and a scripted font, which looks stunning. You can put the most important words – like the bride's and groom's names – in a bold colored font for a focal point, too.

Basic equipment you need to make your own wedding invitations

The basic equipment you need for DIY wedding invitations depends on what type of invitations you desire. At the very least, you need reasonable ink jet printer that will give you quality letters and graphics on the type of paper you want to use. If your printer is less-than-fantastic, consider having the printing done professionally at a copy store (it's really not that expensive) or borrowing a friends printer.

If you'll be cutting the sheets of paper to a different size, I would recommend a paper trimmer so that you get straight, perfect edges every time. Other shape cutters – such as circle cutting tools and punches – can be helpful if you plan to layer paper into scrapbook-style elements.

If you'll be gluing any of your embellishments onto the page, it's essential that you get the right kind of glue. You need it to apply thin but still hold firmly. Personally, I prefer adhesive roller glue, but vellum tape and UHU glue are good options, as well.

Did you know there is a right kind of glue?

When it comes to your wedding invitations, you can't just use any kids' craft glue. It would just be a mess! Instead, you need the right kind of glue – the kind scrapbookers use to put elements of their pages together strongly, but without making the paper wave or have dried glue sticking out around the edges.

My personal favorite is adhesive roller glue, which is really lightweight and easy to use. Vellum tape is nice if you're using vellum or other transparent papers because it won't show underneath the vellum. Double-sided tape is fantastic if you're working with heavier items, like cardstock cutouts and ribbons. Tacky glue is also great because it dries flexibly, which means that if the card is bent, your embellishments are less likely to pop off. It's nice for small surface areas and embellishments like charms and buttons.
