What Is A Dingbat?
So, I hear you ask, "what is a dingbat and why is it of use to me?" Well, these little characters are little gems in the world of DIY wedding invitations. In essence, you can use them to create your invitations from scratch or you can use them as a design element within your invitations. Either way, there are plenty of free dingbat fonts that you can use.
But "what is a dingbat?" A dingbat is an ornamental character or decorative illustration. They're an extension of the alpha-numerical characters on a keyboard. They behave just like a font, so you download a set of dingbats and select the dingbat range you want to use from your font dropdown, then simply type using your keyboard to insert them. You can then place them wherever you like on your design. Graphic designers use dingbat fonts frequently in their designs. Why bother creating an illustration from scratch when there is likely to be a suitable dingbat font you could use? They're great for design accents, bullets and little illustrations. Just like fonts, you can buy them or you can find free fonts. The same with dingbats – there are literally hundreds of free dingbat fonts around that are suitable for wedding invitations. You can get anything including little motifs, monograms, decorative borders, ornamental patterns, swirls, plants and animals. If you can imagine it, there's probably a dingbat similar –which is why they're so great for wedding invitations.
